OUTPATIENT VS. INPATIENT: WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED?

Not every health insurance claim requires the same documents.

The documentation usually depends on the type of treatment.

OUTPATIENT TREATMENT

For a normal outpatient visit, you may need:

• Medical examination record or medical report
• Diagnosis and treatment recommendation
• Prescription
• Test or imaging orders
• Test or imaging results
• VAT invoice
• Detailed statement of expenses, where applicable
• Claim form

Example:

You visit a clinic because of a persistent cough.

The doctor examines you, orders a test, gives you a prescription and you pay VND 1,500,000.

Keep the medical record, test results, prescription and payment documents.

INPATIENT TREATMENT

Hospitalization generally requires additional documentation.

Depending on the case, this may include:

• Medical records
• Admission-related test and imaging results
• Discharge summary
• Prescription after discharge
• Surgery certificate or operation report if surgery was performed
• Accident statement if the hospitalization resulted from an accident
• VAT invoice and detailed statement

Example:

You are hospitalized for five days and undergo surgery.

Your claim file may need to include the medical record, test results, discharge summary, surgery documentation, prescription and financial documents.

The important lesson

Don’t assume that “I have the hospital invoice” means your claim file is complete.

The insurer may need both medical evidence and financial evidence to assess the claim.

And remember:

The final claim decision depends on the terms and conditions of your insurance contract.
