Child co-payment rules in Bao Viet An Gia

When a child under 3 is hospitalized, the hospital bill can surprise parents with unexpected out-of-pocket costs. If your family has Bao Viet An Gia, the child co-payment rules for Bao Viet An Gia are worth understanding before admission.

🏥 How the child co-payment rule works in Bao Viet An Gia
Under the Bao Viet An Gia contract set, for insured persons aged from 15 days to 3 years, the co-payment ratio is 70/30: Bao Viet pays 70% and the insured pays 30%.
This is a rule specific to the youngest age group of the product, tied to the main benefit — inpatient treatment due to illness, accident, or maternity complications. In other words, when a child in this age group receives inpatient treatment, costs may be shared at this ratio rather than paid in full.
📋 When does it apply — and when doesn’t it?
The 70/30 rule does not apply when the insured is examined and treated at public medical facilities or public hospitals — but there is an important exception many parents overlook.
| Place of examination/treatment | 70/30 co-payment |
|---|---|
| Non-public medical facilities or hospitals | Applies |
| Public hospital (regular ward/ward for standard treatment) | Does not apply |
| International ward, voluntary treatment or requested treatment at a public hospital | Applies |
So if your child is hospitalized in a regular ward of a public hospital, the 30% share is not applied under this rule. However, when using an international ward or a requested/voluntary room — even within a public hospital — the 70/30 ratio still applies.
💰 Understanding the 30% out-of-pocket share
The 70/30 ratio shows how payment responsibility is split between the insurer and the insured. However, the product documents do not specify exactly how it is calculated (for example, on the total invoice or on the benefit limit), so check the Insurance Rules and benefit table in your contract set, or ask your advisor, before using services.
Also note these additional rules related to hospitalization costs:
- If the insured uses a room with 2 beds or more, Bao Viet only covers the cost of 01 bed for the insured.
- When treated in an intensive care unit (ICU, HDU, CCU) of a public hospital, the daily hospital cost is capped at 1.5 times the normal daily inpatient cost in the benefit table.
Inpatient costs under the main benefit are limited to a maximum of 60 days per year, along with items such as surgery costs, ambulance, rehabilitation/physiotherapy, and public hospital allowance. See Inpatient Coverage and Limits in Bao Viet An Gia for details.
Co-payment vs. exclusions
Co-payment is the sharing of payment ratios between the two parties, different from exclusions — the risks, illnesses and treatments the insurer is not responsible for. Details on exclusions are set out in Chapter III – General Exclusions of the Bao Viet An Gia Insurance Rules.
✂ Waiting periods for young children — don’t skip this
Beyond co-payment, parents should remember the waiting period rules, as they directly affect whether treatment for a sick child is payable:
- Accident risks: no waiting period.
- Ordinary illness and dental treatment: 30 days.
- Maternity complications: 90 days.
- Pre-existing conditions, special diseases, ligament/meniscus tear, rupture or reconstruction, and diseases listed under general exclusion no. 46: 365 days.
- Children up to 6 years old with bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or pneumonia of any kind: 180 days.
For new participants, the waiting period runs from the contract effective date; for continuously renewed policies, from the first insurance effective date (except when adding new benefits or increasing limits). More in How waiting periods work in Bao Viet An Gia.
